The biggest river in California, the Sacramento River, offers a veriety of fishing. The Salmon run goes from July through December with fish in the 10 to 50 pound class (and the occasional 50+ pounder). The 'Sac', as some have come to know it, is home to the state record Salmon at 88 pounds! Striped Bass begin migration around March and can be caught through June. Stripers range from 5 to 40 plus pounds. Sturgeon season begins during the high water winter run off and lasts into April. These 7-8 foot monsters require some serious strength to win a fight with them. The upper river offers world class Rainbow Trout for bait and fly fisherman. The 'Bows' (Rainbow Trout) range from 2-10 pounds and 30 fish per day is not uncommon. The trout season is open year round, although the best time is Spring and Fall.

A tributary to the Sacramento River flows from Oroville Dam to Verona where it meets the Sacramento River. Spring Salmon begin showing in late March or April and Salmon can be caught through November in different parts of the river. There is also a nice Striped Bass run that starts in March and lasts into May or June. Sturgeon can also be caught in the Feather River.

The Smith River is just South of the Oregon border and the Chetco is just North of the border. These two rivers are two of the best Salmon/Steelhead rivers found anywhere, offering Salmon from October through December and Steelhead December through March. The Smith is unmatched for it's beauty as it winds through some of the largest Redwood tree groves in the state. The Smith and Chetco Rivers are also known for large Salmon and Steelhead with Salmon in the 60 pound class and Steelhead to 25 pounds+! For that wall mound Steelhead or Salmon, these two river are the place to be fishing...
